Description
Habitans et Habitations de l'Entree de Norton [Inhabitants and Dwellings of Norton [Sound] Entrance]; [From Plate 54, Troisieme Voyage de Cook,Paris: Hotel de Thou, 1785] [Engraved by Robert Bernard] Measures: [Illus 8.5x14in on 10.5x15.5in Sheet Illustration 8.5 x 14 inches Plate impression 9.75 x 14.75 inches Some soiling and age toning at edges, vertical fold crease John Webber (1752-1793) was the official artist that accompanied Captain Cook on the third voyage of the Resolution and Discovery, 1776-1780. This voyage was to the islands of the Pacific, Australia, the Pacific Northwest America, Alaska, Kamchatka and Hawaii. In Hawaii, Cook was killed in a misunderstanding with the natives at Kealakekua Bay. This illustration was from a brief encounter with the natives of Norton Sound, Alaska. Webber likely sketched the illustration, a woman with a child on her shoulder a man standing behind her and a log hut, from Cooks journal descriptions of the encounter (from The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages, Volume III Rudiger Joppien and Bernard Smith, Yale University Press, 1988).
